Dispatch: The Baldwin EMS
Department is dispatched through St. Croix County Emergency
Communication Centers enhanced 911 service. Chief Nelson serves on
the Emergency Government Committee, and Asst. Chief Kongshaug chairs
the Emergency Communication Sub Committee of EMS and Fire
users.
First
Responders : The
Baldwin EMS Department has developed a first responder program
in all areas of our ambulance district. The First Responders
are medically trained individuals who are committed to responding to
medical emergencies in their neighborhoods.
Usually
they are the first to arrive on scene and begin stabilizing a
patient. The First Responders are important to rural communities
because of the distance that often exists between community members
and emergency services. They are a vital link in the pre hospital
chain of survival. They also act as a local liaison with the
townships for the department.
Regional Services: The
Baldwin EMS Department and Baldwin Area Medical Center enjoy a close
relationship with Regions level one Trauma Hospital. We work well
with Life Link III critical care units to transport patients to the
destination that may best care for their injury or
illness.
Disaster Situation:
In
the event of a disaster, the Baldwin EMS Department works closely
with St. Croix County Emergency Government for immediate aid. We
also have mutual aid contracts with 15 area EMS Departments through
the Tri-County EMS Association, which Chief Nelson helped to create
in 2000. This relationship has allowed for a free flow of
information and ideas. We have worked on large-scale exercises with
area departments and learned from them what is necessary in
different situations. This association has allowed cost savings in
the form of training and learning from others. We are one of three
EMS departments that maintain a disaster trailer for response in the
county for mutual aid of area communities in need after a natural
disaster.
Fire and Rescue:
We work closely with United Fire and Rescue for mutual training and
preparedness in the event of disasters, as well as every day
responses and for fire fighter rehab and scene safety. We also
cover part of the Roberts-Warren Fire District.
Baldwin
Area Medical Center:
Our
full time staff is now available to work on solutions and training
with the hospital staff on a weekly basis. Chief Nelson and
Lieutenant Julia Cole sit on the ER Committee and attend staff
meetings as requested. We are able to use the hospital facilities
for meetings and training when it is
available.
Our staff is trained
to assist in the Emergency Department when we deliver a patient for
care. We do so whenever the situation requires it.
Baldwin-Woodville and St. Croix Central
Schools: We have an Explorer Program that allows us to
interact with the school district often. We standby for athletic
events and utilize the trained explorers at those events. We go to
the schools many times per year to teach first aid, CPR, and safety
programs. Annually we teach 3rd to 5th grades household
safety, farm safety and drug prevention programs. We teach
10th graders first aid and CPR, and "what to do before
the ambulance arrives"
course.
